虽然相较于以往越来越多的美国人独居(独居家庭比率从1940年的7%上升到25%),独居与孤独之间的联系其实是很微弱的。罗切斯特大学心理学教授哈利瑞斯说: “最强烈的孤独感可能在其他人都在场的时候产生。”卡西奥普说,以大学新生为例:即使他们几乎每时每刻都有人陪伴,但由于朋友和家人离得很远,许多人在学年第一季度都会感到难以想象的孤立感。研究表明,新生的孤独程度可以通过离家的距离来预测。但是到第二季度,大多数新生已经找到了他们高中朋友的社会替代品。不幸的是,随着年龄的增长,重建社会关系变得更为困难。随着越来越多的美国人表示愿意离家寻找工作,美国正转变成一个“暂居社会”,因此那将成为一个很严重的问题。
孤独是相对的:它被定义为一个人对理想的社会交往与他们实际获得的接触之间的感知差异的厌恶情绪。人们往往将自己与他人进行对比,因此身处名流或成功人士的社交团体中的人会尤其感到孤独。卡西奥普说,这就是像南欧国家那样的集体主义文化比个人主义文化有着更深层孤独的原因。同样,孤立的人在大多数人与家人及朋友团聚的平安夜和感恩节这样的节日里,对孤独的感觉更为强烈,也是这个原因。
然而,孤独是每个人都有的一种生理信号。事实上,孤独可以产生适应性,使我们彼此保护,互相照顾。孤独本质上可以使大脑处于高度警觉状态,它告诉我们不要吃冰箱里的剩菜,而是打电话给朋友,一起出去吃饭。卡西奥普说,某些环境因素可能引发孤独感,但长期的空虚和孤立则部分是由于遗传造成的。继承的不是孤独本身,而是对它的敏感性。
像Facebook和MySpace之类的社交网站为人们提供的是一种交往的错觉,这最终将加重孤独的人的寂寞。卡西奥普说这些网站应作为面对面交流的一个补充,而非替代。他把在网站上进行社交同吃芹菜相比:“吃的时候感觉很好,但它不会带给你同样的营养。”对于在日常生活中感到满足和爱的人而言,社会媒体会是一个令人放心的扩展。对于那些已经感觉孤独的人而言,Facebook的状态更新只是在提醒,别人比自己更擅长交朋友和享受生活。
