(1) Arithmetic Addition
In the arithmetic addition, negative numbers are initially in 2's complement, and if the sum obtainedafter the addition is negative, it is in 2's-complement form. The addition of negative numbers is obtainedfrom the addition of their corresponding signed binary numbers represented in signed-2'scomplement form, including their sign bits. And, a carry out of the sign-bit position is discarded.
In the above four examples, each operation performed is addition with the sign bit included. Anycarry out of the sign-bit position is discarded, and negative results are automatically in 2's complementform. To determine the value of a negative number when.it's in signed-2's complement, it is necessary toconvert it to a positive number to place it in a more familiar form.
The procedure is very simple. For example, the signed binary number 11010101 is negativebecause the leftmost bit is ,1, that is, its 2's complement is 00101011, which is the binary equivalent Of+43. Therefore, the original negative number is equal to-43.
(2) Arithmetic Subtraction
Take the 2'S complement of the subtrahend (including the sign bit) and add it to the minuend(including the sign bit). A carry out of the sign-bit,'position is discarded.
